Artelium Wine Estate. An Artists Adventure in Winemaking
Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Sussex countryside in Hassocks, the Artelium Wine Estate offers more than just a sip of exquisite wine; it promises an experience that will leave a lasting impression. Here are six irresistible reasons why this boutique vineyard should top your travel list.
A Welcoming Tasting Experience Like No Other
From the moment you step into the beautifully restored barn that houses the Artelium Tasting Room, you’ll be captivated by its cozy, inviting atmosphere. Picture yourself relaxing by a crackling log burner, enveloped in the warmth of plush sofas draped with faux furs, all while surrounded by captivating art displays. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a scenic walk through the Sussex countryside. Whether you’re enjoying a glass of wine by the fire or indulging in a meal at the bar or dining table, the ambiance is designed to make you feel at home. And on sunny days, the courtyard offers stunning vineyard views—a serene backdrop to savor Artelium’s exquisite wines.
Savor Award-Winning Wines of Unmatched Quality
Although Artelium is a newcomer to the English wine scene, it has quickly gained acclaim for its exceptional wines. Specializing in the three main sparkling wine varietals—Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay—alongside a unique Pinot Gris, Artelium produces both traditional-method sparkling wines and sought-after still wines. These wines are not just beverages; they’re a testament to the burgeoning potential of English viticulture. With accolades like the ‘Newcomer Trophy’ and ‘Top Sparkling Wine’ at the 2022 Wine GB Awards, Artelium’s wines are beloved by top restaurants and independent wine merchants alike. A visit to this estate is a chance to taste wines that have already made a significant mark on the industry.
Immerse Yourself in Exclusive Tasting Tours and Leisurely Lunches
Artelium offers more than just wine tasting—it provides a complete experience. Open from Thursday to Sunday, the estate hosts tasting tours year-round, inviting visitors to delve into the intricate winemaking process while sampling their range of exquisite wines. After your tour, indulge in a leisurely lunch featuring seasonal platters or, during the summer, a more expansive menu. Imagine dining in the cozy tasting room or on the outdoor terrace, surrounded by the rolling vineyards and the breathtaking South Downs. It’s the perfect way to spend a day, fully immersed in the beauty and flavors of Sussex.
Scrumptious Seafood & Pinot Gris Wines
If you’re looking to elevate your visit, don’t miss one of Artelium’s most popular events—an evening of Seafood & Sparkling Wine this Friday. This special event is not to be missed, with pre-booking essential due to its popularity. Each ticket includes a luxurious sharing platter of fresh seafood for two, featuring oysters, lobster, langoustine, smoked salmon, and a bottle of our exceptional Pinot Gris wine. Depending on the weather, you’ll either enjoy this feast al-fresco on the Terrace or in our gorgeous Tasting Room, making it a truly unforgettable dining experience.
Bring the Artelium Experience Home with You
For those who fall in love with Artelium’s wines, the estate’s wine club offers exclusive access to new releases and special events. You can also purchase their wines directly from the tasting room or online, allowing you to bring a piece of Artelium’s charm into your home. Take, for instance, their Curators Cuvée—a bright, vibrant wine with notes of toast, brioche, and apple—perfect for any celebration or a cozy evening in. With these offerings, Artelium ensures that your experience doesn’t have to end when you leave the estate.
Meet the Passionate Team Behind the Wines
At Artelium, the dedication to winemaking is palpable—not just in the wines, but in the passionate team behind them. Winemaker Solly Monyamane, who joined in 2023, brings extensive experience from South Africa and around the world. His expertise and innovative approach are key to Artelium’s success, particularly as he explores the unique expressions of varietals like Pinot Gris in the English climate.
A Scenic Escape Beyond the Wine
No visit to Sussex is complete without a venture into the South Downs. Whether you’re seeking a post-lunch leg stretch or a morning filled with exploration, the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular. Park at Ditchling Beacon and choose your path—west towards the Jack & Jill windmill and Devil’s Dyke, or east towards Lewes. With several loop options, the journey through rolling landscapes and glimpses of the twinkling blue sea will make you feel like you’re floating in happiness, much like Virginia Woolf described.
Before establishing their vineyard in 2018 and 2019, Artelium’s owners, Mark Collins and Julie Bretland, considered opening a sculpture park. This year, they’ve brought that vision to life by collaborating with Sussex sculptor Walter Bailey on a solo show and a new sculpture for the vineyard. It’s just one more way that Artelium blends art, nature, and fine wine into an experience that’s truly one-of-a-kind.
Artelium Wine Estate isn’t just a stop on your travels—it’s a destination where wine, art, and the beauty of Sussex come together in perfect harmony. Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, Artelium promises an experience that will linger long after your visit. Don’t miss the chance to explore this hidden gem in the heart of Sussex.
