The 2019 vintage began with abundant sunshine, a record-hot Easter, and a warm, wet summer. Despite challenges, careful vineyard management yielded clean, flavourful grapes. Ripening in mid October lends a pale, lemon gold hue to the wine.
The nose shows elderflower, nettle, lime flower and a hint of rose petal too. These aromas flow onto the palate to be joined with grapefruit and lemon skin notes, and just a hint of melon and nectarine fruit too. Finishes clean, crisp and dry.

Ortega is our signature wine and was one of the first varieties planted in 1969. We have been producing our popular Biddenden Ortega since 1972, and have kept the original Germanic style label as a historical memento.
Biddenden was one of the first vineyards to plant Ortega in the UK in the late 1960’s. Today Ortega covers just over half of the vineyard. Ortega grapes ripen early and are known for their low acidity and high sugar levels. Ortega is widely used in dry still wines, and can also be used to make sweet wines.
