Inversion 2020 is a limited-edition Blanc de Noir, with only 1,939 bottles produced. Crafted from 83% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Meunier, this wine showcases the best of the Upper Levels vineyard, where the unique terroir lends complexity and depth to the blend. Dominated by the robust Pinot Noir 777 clone (67% of the blend), it is complemented by clones 386, 521, and 817, each contributing to its layered profile.

The wine’s character is shaped by a careful balance of 97% stainless steel aging and 3% maturation in 5-year-old Burgundian barrels, enhancing its finesse. Burgundy yeast Spark amplifies the aromatics, while a non-interventionist approach—eschewing malolactic fermentation and fining—ensures the wine expresses its true varietal essence.

On the nose, Inversion bursts with vibrant red fruit aromas, underpinned by subtle hints of spice and earthiness. The palate delivers a powerful and expressive profile, brimming with red berries, yet refined with a distinctive “grown-up” edge. A backbone of vibrant acidity cleanses the palate, creating a clean and satisfying finish.

This is a wine of elegance and precision, designed to celebrate the potential of Pinot Noir in the UK, particularly the expressive and bold nature of the PN 777 clone.

“Inversion is all about highlighting the power of the PN 777 clone—it’s got a real grown-up edge to it.”

About Black Chalk Estate

Nestled in the picturesque Hampshire countryside, The Black Chalk Estate has emerged as a jewel in England’s burgeoning wine scene. Founded by Jacob Leadley, an experienced winemaker with a passion for crafting sparkling wines that embody the region’s terroir, Black Chalk is located in the Test Valley, where chalk-rich soils mirror those of the famed Champagne region in France.

Black Chalk was conceived with the vision of producing premium sparkling wines that reflect the distinct character of England’s climate and soil. The estate takes its name from the chalk bedrock beneath its vineyards, which plays a vital role in fostering vines with vibrant acidity and minerality, hallmarks of world-class sparkling wines.

Black Chalk cultivates its grapes across meticulously selected sites in Hampshire, including Chalk Stream, where the combination of south-facing slopes and cool microclimates ensures slow, steady ripening of classic Champagne varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The estate focuses on sustainable viticulture, nurturing biodiversity and minimizing environmental impact to preserve the land for future generations.

At Black Chalk, the emphasis is on craftsmanship and patience. The wines are made using the traditional method (Méthode Traditionelle), involving a secondary fermentation in the bottle to achieve their signature fine bubbles and complexity. The estate takes pride in using only hand-harvested, high-quality fruit from each vintage, ensuring that every bottle reflects the year’s unique character.

Black Chalk’s portfolio includes several celebrated sparkling wines: Classic, a refined blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, balancing bright citrus and orchard fruit with a creamy texture and elegant finish; Wild Rose, a vibrant and delicately structured sparkling rosé showcasing notes of summer berries, rose petals, and crisp minerality; and Dancer in Pink, a limited-edition rosé that expresses the winemaker’s artistry, offering lush red fruit flavors and a hint of spice. Each wine has received accolades for its balance, finesse, and ability to stand out in the competitive world of English sparkling wine.

The Black Chalk Estate offers an intimate wine tourism experience, including vineyard tours, where visitors walk among the vines and learn the secrets of the estate’s winemaking; wine tastings, where guests sample award-winning sparkling wines in a relaxed setting; and winemaking workshops, providing hands-on insight into crafting traditional method sparkling wines. Seasonal events like harvest experiences invite guests to participate in grape picking and celebrate with a traditional harvest feast.

Black Chalk has earned critical acclaim from international wine competitions and publications, solidifying its reputation as one of England’s leading sparkling wine producers. Each bottle represents a blend of innovation and respect for tradition, making Black Chalk a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts.

Committed to eco-friendly practices, from sustainable vineyard management to energy-efficient winery operations, Black Chalk ensures exceptional wines while preserving England’s natural beauty. The Black Chalk Estate stands as a shining example of England’s growing stature in fine sparkling wine, offering unparalleled experiences for those exploring the artistry of English winemaking.
