About Chapel Down
Chapel Down is England’s leading wine producer, crafting an award-winning range of sparkling and still wines from the heart of Kent, the Garden of England. Our mission is to redefine the world’s perception of English wine. We own some of England’s finest vineyards, primarily situated on Kent’s North Downs, with a terroir similar to Champagne. Our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Bacchus vines thrive on south-facing chalk soils, benefiting from a warm, maritime climate.
Our world-class winemaking team employs the latest techniques to produce elegant wines with balanced acidity and rich fruit characters. Our wines are served in top UK restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and independent wine merchants. We’re proud to be the Official Sparkling Wine of the England & Wales Cricket Board, Ascot Racecourse, and the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race, as well as an Official Supplier to the London Stock Exchange. Visit us at our Tenterden winery estate for guided tours and experiences.
In a bold move to challenge outdated perceptions, we took our best-selling English sparkling wine to the Champagne region of France for a blind taste test. Under the guise of “Chapelle en Bas,” we invited French consumers to compare our Brut to a major Champagne brand. The verdict? A staggering 60% preferred Chapel Down. French locals and tourists alike praised our wine as “fresher” and “crisper,” with some shocked to discover its English origins. This blind tasting was part of our mission to change the way the world thinks about English wine. We’re proud to showcase the exceptional quality of our sparkling wines, perfect for celebrating life’s special moments.
Watch our campaign video, released during English Wine Week 2023, and discover why Chapel Down is the fresher way to celebrate.

English-grown Bacchus grapes produce aromatic, fresh and crisp wines similar in style to Sauvignon Blanc but with their own distinctive aroma profile.
As is typical of the varietal, our 2022 Bacchus is pale, with a crisp light mouth feel and recogniseable aromatic complexity.
The diversity of aromas can range from herbaceous (tomato leaf, basil, sage, nettle, asparagus, grassy) to citrus (lime zest, lemon, grapefruit) to tropical fruit (medlar, mango, passionfruit) to floral (elderflower, honeysuckle) with the intensity ranging from punchy and intense to more subtle and elegant.
Our style of Bacchus aims for intriguing aromatic complexity and subtle elegance which we believe the 2022 delivers in abundance.
More about the Bacchus grape
The variety originated in Germany in the 1930’s as a cross between Muller-Thurgau and Silvaner x Riesling which has helped contribute to its complex nature. In order to enhance this complexity and build ‘terroir-character’ into our wines we blend multiple unique batches picked on different dates, split into different press fractions and fermented with different yeasts.
Food Match Suggestions: The crisp acidity and freshness makes Bacchus perfect as an appetising aperitif wine. It also pairs beautifully with English asparagus or goats cheese as well as seafood such as dressed shellfish or stronger flavoured salads such as Caesar or rocket.
