About Hendred Vineyard
Hendred Vineyard is nestled on the slopes west of East Hendred, a picturesque spring-line village in Oxfordshire’s Vale of the White Horse. For over 50 years, this boutique vineyard has produced award-winning still and sparkling wines, reflecting the rich terroir of the region. The nutrient-dense soil, combined with sunny, breezy conditions and meticulous, hands-on farming, yields exceptionally clean, succulent grapes that shine in every bottle.
Originally established by the pioneering McKinnon family, the vineyard spans three acres and features Pinot Noir, Seyval Blanc, Madeleine Angevine, and Bacchus vines. Local expert Biagio Grillo played a key role in its early success. Today, the Bell family continues its legacy with the help of Philippe Desaint, a skilled viticulturist from southern France who brings dedication and innovation to the vineyard’s development.
Hendred wines are a true reflection of the Oxfordshire countryside, consistently earning accolades, including ‘Best Rosé’ in 2019 and 2023, and ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ in 2020 from the Thames and Chilterns Vineyards Association. These celebrated wines are available for purchase directly from the vineyard, at local shops, or online, with collection and delivery options available.
During summer, the vineyard opens its shop for tastings and leisurely wanderings—no booking or charge required. Dates are advertised on the vineyard’s website and at the gate. Wild Rose Sparkling Rosé captivates with its delicate wild-rose pink hue, exuding elegance and complexity. On the nose, vibrant aromas of ripe red berries intertwine with subtle floral nuances.
The palate is a delightful balance of freshness and bright fruit, with luscious notes of strawberries and raspberries complemented by a soft, creamy texture, a result of partial malolactic fermentation. This harmonious interplay concludes with a beautifully long, refined finish.
Aged for a minimum of 22 months on lees and rested an additional six months on cork post-disgorgement, this sparkling rosé demonstrates exceptional maturity and finesse.
Wild Rose shines alongside sashimi and maki rolls, enhanced by the salty tang of soy sauce and the zing of fresh ginger. It also pairs effortlessly with charcuterie boards and cheese platters. This wine is the perfect aperitif but will also be a fantastic match with a baked trout fillet with lemons. A real treat for a dinner party!
This is the eighth release of our best and most acclaimed sparkling rosé wine. Made with 100% Pinot Noir grapes which were lovingly hand picked from our Monkshatch plot at the end of the first week of October 2019.
Two thirds of the grapes were crushed and destemmed and soaked for two hours prior to pressing to obtain the lovely light ‘salmon pink’ colour before fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
One third of the grapes were whole bunch pressed with the base wine (using only the Cuvée) fermented and aged in used oak barrels. Both batches went through malolactic fermentation.
