Our first vintage in 2010 feels like yesterday and like a different world altogether. The nerves and anxiety of years of work and planning all coming down to a single day. Thirty or so virtual strangers turned up to pick coralled by our friend Celia Kozlowski. Little did we know that some of them would still be harvesting with us to this day!
We sold the vast majority of the wine years ago but we kept a few bottles on lees for 13 years. We always keep a some in the cellars for family occasions and have decided to put 50 out into the world for people that are interested in seeeing how this gem has developed. The LD stands for Late Disgorged – doing it this way preserves the freshness of the wine and indeed, these bottles are remarkable. They resemble a blanc de blancs in terms of its taste profile which is fresh and full of minerality with distinctive grapefruit citrus aromas that I can’t say that we remember from it’s first incarnation. It’s a beautiful delicate wine that is testament to the quality of those young vines at Higher Plot.
About Smith & Evans
Guy Smith and Laura Evans planted the Higher Plot vineyard in 2008, after a four-year search for the perfect site to produce high-quality sparkling wine. They tend to the vines year-round, from midwinter pruning to harvest in late summer.
The vineyard’s unique terroir, with its White Lias Limestone Ridge, has long been recognised for its ability to produce early-ripening, high-quality fruit. The site features 300-year-old terracing, originally built for orchards when cider was considered a premium product.
The vineyard’s free-draining, calcareous limestone soil is identical to that found in some of the world’s greatest vineyards. The local climate is also ideal for grape cultivation. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier vines are planted on the south-facing slopes, with the first harvest taking place in 2010.
The team’s approach to viticulture focuses on balance and harmony with the surrounding environment. And, of course, no vineyard is complete without a loyal canine companion. Meet Bert, the current vineyard dog, a loveable mix of Lab, German Pointer, and other breeds.

A refined English sparkling wine showcasing elegance and complexity, Premier Cuvée is a testament to expert craftsmanship. Aged for 36 months on lees, this wine opens with enticing aromas of crisp green apples, zesty lemons, warm honey, and subtle baked bread.
On the palate, a vibrant, fruit-driven profile emerges, led by citrus notes of lemon and lime, followed by layers of green apple and apricot. The latest release of our highly successful Classic Cuvée Brut that was originally released in 2019, and sold out quickly.
This new release is made from grapes from the excellent 2019 and 2020 vintages. Made from a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, secondary fermentation in bottle followed by 24 months gaining complexity on lees. The wine therefore benefits from some lovely bottle age and is ready to be enjoyed now. 12% ABV.
Coddington Vineyard Pinot Gris Classic Cuvee 2021 (6 Bottles) Ledbury, Herefordshire, England

This grape produces dark blue grapes when ripened at the end of October giving the wine a slight blush appearance. By allowing the natural fermentation to extend to 30 months, the Pinot grape makes a very fine sparkling wine having a fruity aroma and spicy flavour. Crisp and dry.
