Dunkelfelder is a striking German red grape, created by Gustav Adolf Frölich and later christened “Dunkelfelder”—meaning “dark grower”—by ampelographer Helmut Becker in the 1930s, with varietal status granted in 1980. This unique grape is prized for its exceptionally deep, rich colour, making it perfect for enhancing the visual appeal of red blends though some wines are bottled varietally.
Dunkelfelder ripens early and yields modest harvests, with small, intensely pigmented berries that produce wines boasting full body, good acidity, and smooth tannins—though flavour tends to be quite neutral.
Despite its subtle aromatic profile, Dunkelfelder brings velvety structure and powerful colour—a great choice to boost presence in blends. It pairs beautifully with rich, hearty dishes like steak and kidney pie, liver dumplings, or tomato-based pasta—ideal for adding both visual and textural depth to UK drinking tables.
