Rondo

Rondo is a hardy, early-ripening red grape variety developed in Germany in 1964 by Professor Vilém Kraus, from a cross of Zarya Severa and St. Laurent. It has since found a strong home in northern Europe, especially in the UK, thanks to its ability to thrive in cooler climates and its natural resistance to mildew and fungal diseases.

The grape produces wines that are deeply coloured, almost inky red, with a medium body and moderate tannins. On the palate, Rondo often displays ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum flavours, supported by earthy notes and gentle spice. Its naturally high acidity brings freshness, while careful oak aging can add complexity with hints of vanilla or toast.

For UK wine lovers, Rondo is one of the country’s most successful red varieties, pairing beautifully with grilled meats, rich stews, game dishes, and strong cheeses. Bold yet approachable, it’s a true flagship grape for English reds.
