Phoenix

Phoenix is a modern and resilient white grape variety created in Germany in 1964 by crossing Bacchus with the hybrid Villard Blanc. Though partly non-vinifera in its background, it is officially recognised as Vitis vinifera, making it one of the few interspecific hybrids permitted in quality wine production in the EU.

Largely cultivated in Rheinhessen, Nahe, and Pfalz, Phoenix also thrives in cooler UK climates, where its high disease resistance reduces the need for chemical sprays, supporting more sustainable viticulture.

In the glass, Phoenix is remarkably aromatic, offering Muscat-like florals, elderflower, and herbaceous notes, balanced by crisp acidity and generally lower alcohol levels—a light, refreshing style that’s perfect as an aperitif or summer sip.

This wine pairs beautifully with seafood, white meats, fresh salads, or cheese. It’s a lightly aromatic, eco-conscious choice that’s quietly gaining favour among UK wine enthusiasts.
