Madeleine Angevine

Madeleine Angevine is an early-ripening white grape with roots in France’s Loire Valley, though the version grown in the UK is more accurately known as Madeleine x Angevine 7672—a freely pollinated seedling of the original, introduced in the late 1950s and now well established in English vineyards.

Thriving in cool, maritime climates and often maturing sooner than Riesling, this grape delivers crisp, dry wines with a flowery nose and flavors of green apple, pear, citrus, elderflower, and honeysuckle, often supported by a gentle minerality. Its bright acidity and light body make it wonderfully refreshing, and it’s frequently showcased in still styles, blends (with varieties like Seyval Blanc or Bacchus), and even sparkling wines.

For UK wine drinkers, it’s a superb choice with seafood (especially shellfish or crab), delicate salads, fresh herbs, and soft cheeses like goat’s cheese or Brie.
