Solaris

Solaris is a modern white grape variety developed in Germany in 1975 at the Freiburg Wine Institute, by crossing Merzling × (Seyve-Villard 5276 × Riesling × Pinot Gris). Specially bred for cold climates and strong disease resistance, it is one of the most reliable grapes for northern Europe and has become a success story in English and Welsh vineyards.

In the glass, Solaris produces wines that are aromatic, fresh, and expressive, often with flavours of ripe peach, apricot, pineapple, and citrus, supported by lively acidity. It can deliver both crisp, dry whites and richer, textured examples with subtle honeyed or nutty notes, particularly when harvested later. Some versions are also used in dessert wines and sparkling styles, showcasing its versatility.

For UK drinkers, Solaris is a vibrant, food-friendly choice. It pairs beautifully with seafood, grilled chicken, creamy pastas, and goat’s cheese, while its tropical edge makes it perfect for summer sipping.
