About Great Lodge Vineyard
Set within the historic grounds of a 16th-century estate, Great Lodge Vineyard is a hidden treasure in the Essex countryside. Located near the village of Great Bardfield, the vineyard is part of a 100-acre estate steeped in history, with its name derived from the grand Tudor hunting lodge that once stood on the site. Today, the vineyard combines this rich heritage with modern winemaking expertise to produce exceptional English wines.
The vineyard spans 4 hectares of sandy, well-drained soils that benefit from Essex’s sunny and dry climate, ideal for cultivating cool-climate grape varieties. Planted primarily with Bacchus, Pinot Noir, and Reichensteiner, Great Lodge crafts wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Their Bacchus wines, in particular, are celebrated for their crisp, aromatic profile, featuring vibrant notes of elderflower, gooseberry, and citrus.
Great Lodge Vineyard takes pride in its small-scale, artisanal approach to winemaking, emphasizing quality and attention to detail in every bottle. The estate also produces a sparkling wine made in the traditional method, praised for its elegance and balance.
Visitors are welcomed to explore the estate’s enchanting grounds, which include a 16th-century barn and formal gardens. Guided tours and tastings offer an insight into the winemaking process, paired with the opportunity to enjoy the tranquil beauty of this historic setting. With its dedication to heritage and craftsmanship, Great Lodge Vineyard is a true gem in the English wine landscape.
