Biddenden Vineyards Ortega (6 Bottles) Biddenden, Kent, England

£99.00

UK MAINLAND SHIPPING INCLUDED

Semi-aromatic on the nose, displaying appealing fresh aromas of green apple, grapefruit, cut grass and flora, whilst the palate is medium bodied, crisp and deliciously fruity. May be served as an aperitif, this white would also pair well with lightly spicy dishes and seafood.

Ortega is our signature wine and was one of the first varieties planted in 1969. We have been producing our popular Biddenden Ortega since 1972, and have kept the original Germanic style label as a historical memento.

Biddenden was one of the first vineyards to plant Ortega in the UK in the late 1960’s. Today Ortega covers just over half of the vineyard. Ortega grapes ripen early and are known for their low acidity and high sugar levels. Ortega is widely used in dry still wines, and can also be used to make sweet wines.

About Biddenden Vineyards

Nestled in the picturesque Weald of Kent, Biddenden Vineyards is one of the UK’s most established and celebrated wineries. Founded in 1969 by the Barnes family, it stands as a testament to the evolution of English winemaking, blending tradition with innovation. Biddenden is Kent’s oldest commercial vineyard and a beacon for English wine enthusiasts seeking high-quality wines with a local touch.

Biddenden Vineyards began as a 9-acre plot dedicated to growing apples for cider production. Realizing the region’s potential for grape cultivation, the Barnes family shifted their focus to winemaking, inspired by the success of Germanic grape varieties in cooler climates. Over the years, Biddenden has grown to encompass 23 acres, producing a range of award-winning wines while remaining family-owned and operated, now under the stewardship of the second and third generations of the Barnes family.

Biddenden’s winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in sustainability and quality. The vineyard is planted on south-facing slopes, maximizing sunlight exposure and ensuring optimal conditions for ripening. The winery specializes in cool-climate grape varieties, with Ortega as its flagship grape, alongside Pinot Noir, Bacchus, and Reichensteiner. These varieties are nurtured through minimal intervention techniques, ensuring the wines express the unique terroir of Kent.

Biddenden produces an impressive range of wines, including still, sparkling, and dessert wines. Among their standout offerings are Biddenden Ortega, a fresh and aromatic white wine with hints of citrus, stone fruit, and a crisp finish; Gribble Bridge Rosé, a delicate and fruity rosé perfect for summer sipping; Biddenden Sparkling Rosé, crafted in the traditional method and exemplifying England’s reputation for world-class sparkling wines; and Biddenden Late Harvest, a rare dessert wine made from Ortega grapes, offering rich sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Each wine reflects Biddenden’s dedication to quality and their skill in showcasing the versatility of English vineyards.

Biddenden Vineyards offers an enchanting visitor experience, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the vineyard and learn about the winemaking process, from vine to bottle, through guided tours that include tastings of their wines, ciders, and juices. For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, self-guided walks allow guests to wander through the vineyards at their own pace while soaking in the beautiful Kentish countryside. The on-site shop offers the chance to sample and purchase wines, as well as locally produced ciders, juices, and other artisan products.

Biddenden’s wines have received numerous accolades, cementing their status as leaders in the English wine industry. Their Ortega and sparkling wines, in particular, have been celebrated in competitions both nationally and internationally, underscoring their commitment to excellence.

The vineyard places great emphasis on sustainability and local engagement. Biddenden supports biodiversity through careful vineyard management and minimizes its environmental impact with sustainable practices. Additionally, the vineyard is a strong advocate for Kent’s local produce, often collaborating with nearby farms and businesses.

Biddenden Vineyards is more than a winery; it’s a cornerstone of Kent’s cultural and gastronomic identity. With its rich history, exceptional wines, and commitment to sustainability, Biddenden continues to lead the charge in showcasing the potential of English wine to the world. Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or a curious novice, a visit to Biddenden offers a unique and memorable experience.
