About Flint Vineyard
Ben Witchell's journey into winemaking began with a passion for learning about wines from around the world. This enthusiasm soon turned into an obsession, prompting him to leave his IT job and pursue a career in winemaking. Ben enrolled in a three-year degree in Oenology and Viticulture at Plumpton College in Sussex. This comprehensive education not only deepened his understanding of winemaking but also instilled in him a respect for the science behind it. He graduated in 2012 with a first-class degree and awards for 'Best Research Project' and 'Top Winemaking Student'.
Ben's next step was a winemaking position in Beaujolais, France. This experience taught him to think creatively and intuitively, moving beyond the traditional rules of winemaking. After two years, Ben returned to England, eager to start his own winemaking venture. A chance email to local farmer and entrepreneur Adrian Hipwell led to the discovery of a suitable plot of land in Norfolk. Detailed site analysis confirmed the potential of the site, and Flint Vineyard was born. Ben moved to Earsham, Norfolk in 2015 and has since established a thriving vineyard with over 26,000 vines covering six hectares.
Flint Vineyard has gained a reputation for producing premium English still wines, and Ben has innovated with methods in the winery, including the creation of the Charmat Rosé, the first sparkling wine made using the Charmat method. With a state-of-the-art winery and plans for expansion, Ben and his team are excited about the future, striving to continually improve and produce exceptional wines.
