About Polgoon Vineyard
Polgoon – Cornish for “Pond on the Downs” – perfectly reflects the vineyard and orchard’s stunning location atop a sunny hill overlooking Mounts Bay. This connection to the land and sea is beautifully illustrated on Polgoon’s labels and logo, representing its deep roots in the Cornish landscape.
John and Kim Coulson purchased Polgoon in 2002 after years as fish merchants in Newlyn. Transforming the derelict flower farm into a vineyard, they planted 3,500 vines in 2004, including Rondo, Pinot Noir Précoce, Seyval Blanc, and Ortega. Their first harvest in 2006 was a triumph, producing an award-winning still rosé. Despite early challenges, including harsh Cornish weather, they diversified into cider production, which remains a key part of their business.
John is a self-taught winemaker, adapting techniques to Cornwall’s unique conditions. Polgoon now produces an exquisite range of still and sparkling wines, celebrated for their clean, delicate expression of English fruit.
Sustainability is at Polgoon’s core. They create wildlife corridors and preserve natural habitats across 40% of the land, supporting biodiversity with features like ponds and beehives. Polgoon minimises environmental impact with strict recycling policies, reduced plastic use, and collaborations with initiatives like Plastic Free Penzance, earning Plastic Free Status in 2018. Pressing waste is repurposed as animal feed, and their shop supports local businesses to reduce transport miles.
Polgoon embodies a deep love for the environment, producing high-quality, sustainable wines and ciders while fostering a connection to the land and community.
