Kerner

Kerner is a modern German white grape variety, created in 1929 by crossing Trollinger (a red grape) with Riesling. It was named after the German poet and physician Justinus Kerner, and has become one of the most successful Riesling hybrids, with plantings across Germany, Switzerland, and even the UK.

In the glass, Kerner wines are light to medium-bodied with bright acidity and a flavour profile reminiscent of Riesling but often softer and more approachable. Expect aromas of green apple, pear, citrus, and stone fruits, sometimes with delicate hints of spice, herbs, or blossoms. The best examples balance crisp freshness with a touch of roundness, making them versatile and easy to enjoy.

For UK drinkers, Kerner is a food-friendly choice that pairs well with grilled fish, shellfish, chicken dishes, vegetarian cuisine, and soft cheeses. Refreshing, aromatic, and slightly exotic, Kerner is a great alternative for those who love Riesling but want something a little different.
