About Smith & Evans
Guy Smith and Laura Evans planted the Higher Plot vineyard in 2008, after a four-year search for the perfect site to produce high-quality sparkling wine. They tend to the vines year-round, from midwinter pruning to harvest in late summer.
The vineyard's unique terroir, with its White Lias Limestone Ridge, has long been recognised for its ability to produce early-ripening, high-quality fruit. The site features 300-year-old terracing, originally built for orchards when cider was considered a premium product.
The vineyard's free-draining, calcareous limestone soil is identical to that found in some of the world's greatest vineyards. The local climate is also ideal for grape cultivation. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier vines are planted on the south-facing slopes, with the first harvest taking place in 2010.
The team's approach to viticulture focuses on balance and harmony with the surrounding environment. And, of course, no vineyard is complete without a loyal canine companion. Meet Bert, the current vineyard dog, a loveable mix of Lab, German Pointer, and other breeds.
