About Breaky Bottom
I'm fortunate to have grown up surrounded by good wine and food, thanks to my French/Italian mother and French grandfather, Alex Mercier, a renowned restaurateur. In 1974, I planted Breaky Bottom vineyard in a secluded fold of the Sussex Downs, recognizing the potential for cool-climate wines. With just six acres of vines, I've built a reputation for producing top-quality, limited-edition wines. My approach is rooted in tradition, with a focus on sustainability and conservation. I've dedicated each cuvée to friends and family, celebrating their contributions to my life.
Natural England supports Breaky Bottom through the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme ‘to conserve wildlife, maintain and enhance landscape quality and character and protect the natural environment.’ Our holding is made up of a six acre vineyard surrounded by steep hillsides of species rich chalk Downland grazed by sheep. The traditional flint barn and farmhouse, originally built in 1827, form the boundaries of what was once a winter cattle yard.Sheep have been part of the life at Breaky Bottom for hundreds of years. The original people who lived on the farm were shepherds.
